How do you dry out an IPad?

My toddler grandson tossed his mother’s iPad into the family pool. Luckily, it landed on an inflatable lounge thing so it did not go into the pool. However, water was splashed upon it. The unit is still somewhat functional but not as good as it used to be according to my daughter. Is there a way to dry this out?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Water is one of the primary enemy of Apple's iPad, due to the fact that it is an electronic device and any untoward incident such as accidentally splashing of water on the tablet voids any warranty that comes with it. If you are in a situation like this, it is advisable that you should not bring the iPad to an Apple Store and say that it stopped working, because the device is equipped with Liquid Submersion indicators, which has the ability to detect water damage, it could embarrass you by not telling the real score.

The first thing you should avoid doing is using your iPad or connect it to an outlet, since it could damage the device permanently. Second, find yourself any available Silica Gel("moisture absorbent substance") enclosed in tiny packaging. It can be bought at handicraft or electronic outlets, which they bundle this with the boxed products.

Accordingly, "pack the iPad in a sealed plastic bag among the packets of Silica gel and store it in a dry place for at least three days. That should ensure all the moisture is drawn out from the electronic innards of your iPad. Finally connect up your iPad to your PC, load up iTunes and try to do a complete Restore. This will provide you with the best chance of getting the iPad to its pre-drenched working state."

Getting an iPad wet is the worst thing that can happen to it. At least your daughter's iPad was only wet slightly. The iPad warranty specifically excludes any problems that result from it damaged by getting wet.

It is important to know what is the best thing to do if iPad stopped working after it got damaged for whatever reason. There have been various reports on the internet where some people have successfully dried out their water damaged iPad. However, it is important to note that you should not restart the iPad or plub it into a power source if it is wet.

The best way to dry out the iPad is using Silica gel packets. This will help absorb much of the moisture in the iPad. If you keep some packaging for electronics like camera, you may have some silica gel around in your house. If you cannot find one you can purchase it at Arts and Crafts stores because they use it for drying flowers.
The next option is to get some of it in the electronic store or order in online.

If you have your silica gel ready, pack the iPad in a sealed plastic bag together with the silica gel packets and place it in a dry place for about 3 days. This is to ensure that all of the moisture is removed from the inside of the device.

Lastly, connect your iPad to your computer and load your favorite application and try to do a complete restore. This will help you get the iPad to a working state.

Sadly most the damage is likely done. When an electronic device gets wet it needs to be dealt with very quickly. First she should have immediately dried any water off the outside and pulled the battery as well as any other removable components. Basically you want to disassemble it as much as possible.

Next dry any surfaces you can reach with an anti-static cloth of some sort. Then place everything in a bowl of uncooked rice in a warm location and allow to sit overnight or even for a few days. It's important not to power on the Ipad at all until you think it's dried out. With luck the water won't have already damaged anything. Some guides recommend also wiping the exterior down with rubbing alcohol to help absorb moisture from the interior as far as electronics go, not sure that's a good idea with an Ipad.
