How do you determine the quality of a wine?

I plan to buy a high quality wine for my husband’s guest, but I don’t know how to determine the quality of a wine. I want to buy both red and white wine. Does a high price mean a better wine? How do I judge the quality of a wine?

Do you have any bodegas in your area? I live near the Jalon valley and there are some wonderful old bodegas where you can taste the wine before buying it. They sell wines at various different prices. I think this is the best way to choose wine, you know exactly what you are buying.

The highest price doesn't always mean that the wine will be more enjoyable. The best wine is the one that you enjoy most.

For me red wine needs to have lush red fruit flavors, without too much tannin and white wine I like to be crisp and fruity, without being overly dry and acidic and if I buy from a store Riojas usually fit the bill for me, the quality is consistently good and there are various prices.

This is a quote from the website below;

"Classification
Not just any wine can be called Rioja; as well as being made in the Rioja classified area wines must pass a series of analytical and organoleptic tests to determine if the wine is worthy or not of the Denominación de Origen Calificada status. The numbered back label or seal on a bottle of Rioja is your guarantee of quality as well as the origin, vintage and ageing category of the wine. Rioja wines are classified according to the amount of time they have spent ageing in the winery; meaning that they are never sold until they have aged to perfection. "

It is worth a look at the site, there is a lot of information about wine which may help you to make your choices.
