For the most part, I really don't put much stock in what someone says their gender is online. What matters is what they're like. A troll is a troll, no matter how he/she identifies.

M$I would have to say that the first impression I see in people is as you stated, by the way someone answers a question or how they talk. This is of course placing stereotypes that men react in one way, and women in another. But in many cases it's true. There are always exceptions, where as there are men that show more compassion that women, or women that show more strength and hard emotion.
When in doubt, I say ask. If it is truly important for you to know the details of the person you're interacting with, ask them. Are you a Miss or a Mr.? Just explain that you didn't want to assume and risk offending them.
I would prefer someone to be honest with me, rather than assume I'm someone when I'm not.
