How do you define "helpful answer"?

I was reading through Jason's question regarding the ten best films of 2008 ( http://www.mahalo.com/answers/movies/the-10-best-films-of-2008 ) and I noticed that a lot of answers were labeled as "unhelpful." While I could see people labeling answers which only listed 10 movies and no information as unhelpful (because Jason stated that he wanted 1-3 sentences about each one). However, some well-thought out answers were selected as unhelpful. So, now I'm curious as to how you decide to "push the button" and label an answer as helpful or unhelpful?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

I think answers are unhelpful first and foremost if they are poorly written. This is why I don't go onto Yahoo Answers at all. Generally, I can't understand the questions or answers because the grammar is so bad.

As far as helpful, they should simply answer the question concisely and leave no further questions. Long answers that "miss the point," as mentioned above, are of little use.

I look at Mahalo as I look at my own career - I give the best answer I can possibly give within time and budgetary constraints, and if I see someone else put forth the same type of effort, I want to reward them for doing so.

However, if I see an answer that answers the question in a really clever or original fashion, I may be inclined to consider that a helpful answer.

QUALITY, PEOPLE!

I only label an answer as unhelpful if it doesn't any the question. A helpful vote is easier to get though because I think that as long as you can tell that someone put an effort in to get you a reasonable good answer, they were doing their best to be helpful, so I knock a vote their way.

it's a helpful answer if it actually pertains to the question and offers some kind of insight. the people who just answer "yes" or"no", or some other one line answer definitely aren't offering up any pearls of wisdom, and are just looking to make some quick points and maybe fall ass backwards into some mahalo money. For that, they get a no from me for "helpful answer?"

You base it primarily on weather or not the answer had information that you would have otherwise not known. A secondary consideration would be weather or not the person was truely attempting to help, or if they were being sarcastic.

The most "helpful" is the one that comes from much re-search, proper grammar, personal experience and from the heart.

If the answer gives the question-er a warm fuzzy in their belly and they don't have to look any further to find the knowledge they are seeking... then the answer is helpful.

I honestly haven't clicking on helpful or unhelpful yet. I guess I should start doing that though? I didn't realize that was an option for people who didn't leave the questions, or I guess I didn't realize there was some sort of protocol about using it.

The term "helpful" is actually not very "helpful" as evidenced by the range of answers to this question. Different people have different criteria for what a quality answer is. It would be better to just use a terminology-free "thumbs up or thumbs down" type system in my opinion.

In the end, that's up to the asker. If they don't select a "best answer" in time, the community does. That's kinda fun, too... I spent some time last night voting for best answer and I noticed a slight bug: you can't vote for your own answer. So, I suppose, the best thing to do is not vote in that case. Machiavelli might vote for an obviously bad answer, but I'm not sure that's a good idea, and I know that's bad for the community.

Also, a related complaint... because we can't vote our own answers as helpful or not, we are unable to see feedback. For all I know, 8 people could mark my answer as unhelpful, and I'm not going to know.

An answer is helpful if it answers the question, even in the slightest way. If it does not answer the question at all, or leads the person asking the question in the wrong direction, then the answer can be considered unhelpful. For instance, if someone wanted to know the top bands in the US for a given year, and the answerer provides the top bands in the UK for the given year, then this answer can be considered unhelpful to the person asking the question, yet may be helpful for people reading the answers, as some people may want to know this information, as it kills two birds with one stone. Now, if someone were to outright provide the wrong answer, this answer and not exactly what the person is asking for, then this could also be unhelpful. It's weird, because sometimes something can be considered unhelpful to everyone else, but the person asking the question may find it helpful. In the end, helpful and unhelpful answers are subjective, very much so in the eye of the asker.

A helpful answer stops you from reading all the other answers.

It's all a matter of perception - there's so much that can get lost in translation between the motives of the person asking the question, how people understand and react to the question and how well formulated the responses are.

Personally, I just look for the answer that is most helpful to my personal understanding of the question. I don't think you can look any further than that without ascribing bad motivations to the other people voting.

If some answers that were helpful were labeled unhelpful, then maybe some people are getting a little bit competitive.

It sucks, but given the formula of the site, until traffic grows, I think most people aren't even trying to specialize, and are just answering questions from the answers homepage. I think that's another reason why answers tend to be bad.

As for what I define as helpful, if I ask a question and people answer it to the best of their ability, and completely relative to how I asked it, then I consider it helpful.

If people are just speculating, or just copied and pasted the same thing I just found in google before asking my question (which is what many seem to do) then I consider it unhelpful.

Regarding the competitiveness, that is what I'm wondering. Do people think that by labeling an answer as unhelpful, there will be less chance it will be chosen as best answer? Are they simply doing it because they don't like the person who posted?

I don't know if this is regarded as a violation of rules, but if I am thinking of answering a question and then I see an answer that is off the charts, I generally mark as helpful and then also reply to the comment with something like, "This is the best answer."

I usually don't judge an answer by the length. I judge it simply by whether or not it is helpful and answers the question. For example, i that was the only reply to the question, would the original poster be happy? Could they make a sound decision based on the reply?

I think ONLY the question poster should be able to rate whether or not the questions are helpful.

Take this scenario:

Someone posts a LONG and original answer, but totally misses the point of the question. Then, someone posts a brief answer but it totally answers the posters question. The long poster jumps on and marks the short answer as not helpful simply because he is bitter that someone else might get the tip without spending the time that he spent on a reply.

Scenario 2:

Someone posts a silly question that clearly is meant to get silly answers. Other posters see the sarcastic answers and miss the sarcasm of the question. They mark the answers as "not helpful". Doh!

The system still needs o be ironed out.

For me, a helpful answer is one that answers the question and provides some reasoning why. If appropriate, citations are added. Extra bits like audio video and images are nice, but not needed for me.

The only time I'll mark something as "unhelpful" is if it is not answering the question that is asked, or if it is too short to completely answer the question. Also, excessively "jokey" answers that don't also answer the question, or rude answers, I mark as unhelpful.

I'm fine if there is duplicate information. Even if two people who answer say the same thing, they can both be helpful. I don't like to dock people for thinking alike. Only one person gets the "best answer" so I figure those who provide "good" answers should be rewarded, not penalized.

Looking specifically at Jason's movie question, there's something screwy going on there. It is an outlier. Most answers to questions I've seen have either been unrated or rated as helpful.

There is no reason that many of those questions should have been tagged as "unhelpful." Most of them are, in fact, helpful, and a few are not terribly helpful because they don't give details.

Just speculating, but maybe the "big money" on the line on the question is causing people to be more cuthroat? Either they are rating as "unhelpful" to benefit their own question, or putting the answers under more scrutiny? It has the most "unhelpful answer" tags marked on the most questions of any other question on Mahalo Answers so far.

I have seen other answers with more "unhelpful" tags, but usually it's just one answer on a question that is, obviously, unhelpful. But nearly every single answer on that movie question has at least one unhelpful answer.

That 'aint right and it 'aint fair.

In addition to the "Helpful Answers" above, I also look for duplication. If an answer is duplicated I *consider* giving a "no".

The problem is... when people are giving answers, others are as well, and duplication can occur. So, I have to look at the times as well...

If that's your definition, then you should look at the time. If two answers are the same a few minutes apart, then it is possible they were typing at the same time. If they are a few hours apart, then it is more likely that the second person did not read the answers before posting (which is not a crime but not always helpful).
