How do you decorate your Christmas tree?

What kind of ornaments do you use? Do you just buy a themed tree set each year or do you use ornaments you have collected over the years? What kind of lights? Colors? Tinsel or no tinsel? Pictures of you tree would be great!

I don't have any pics, but we have a fake tree with white lights going all through it (as opposed to just in a spiral going up the tree).

The ornaments are so diverese, people spend a rather long time looking at it!! We have ceramic hearts from Ireland, An actual Jack Skellington bendy figure, A Chicago Bears orb (my wife's), a mini statue ornament of Marilyn Monroe, Star Wars heads (Boba Fett, Yoda, C3PO and a Stormtrooper) a blown glass heart from Neimans, a peice of paper that says Opa on it that was once a gift tag on a present for my grandad, some cat "windchimes" that tinkle when the cats try to climb the tree, some snow men, a mini Bud Light can, lots of Santa's and Father Christmas's and the obligatory angel or two.

Really, words don't do it justice. It looks pretty cool, but it's kind of crazy too - but VERY festive and very sentimental. I'll try to get a pic and post it later!

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

If you have kids, collecting ornaments each year is the way to go in my opinion because each kid usually has their favorite and they grow up looking forward to being able to revisit the ornament each year. My entire childhood, we had the exact same fake tree and the exact same ornaments, adding a few extra each year. Then, when an ornament got really tired and beat up, we would all sit down and redo the ornament with some paint or glitter or some glued on beads. Doing things this way made for some really awesome, tearfully nostalgic memories I still revisit to this day. Then, when the kids get old enough and move out, you can send a few of their favorite ornaments with them. My mom did this and she also gave me the tree, although it's a lot shorter now. LOL I am thankful she did, because now, if I ever have kids, I can pass it onto them. They are kind of an heirloom now.

As for colors or a theme, I like picking a metal (silver or gold) and then one or two other colors and going with that. My tree for years now has been blue and silver. Blue lights, blue ornaments with silver trim. It's so elegant looking. My mom prefers gold and burgundy for her tree.

I thought this was an especially cool tradition.
Talk about endearing!! I actually have a broken turtle toy on our tree that used to be my uncle's when he was little. One year, my grabdad stepped on it and broke it and my uncle was SO sad!! So, instead of throwing it away, he put a hanging hook on it and we see it each and every year. That turtle is probably 60 years old now!!! Wow... maybe older actually...
Anyway, I like you idea to keep ornaments alive and well - you rock!

I bought a tree many years ago - I prefer an artificial tree over a natural one. And when I bought the tree, I also bought basic decorating items such as red, green and golden balls, garlands and a tree topper.

Next, each and every year, I buy a few additional items like victorian decorations (I've got a victorian chair, some mini cushions, bows, birds, etc.) and decorate the tree with them, so, number of decorations grows every year.

Now there's almost no place left on my tree so I decided to buy a new one and this time make a themed Christmas tree for the dining room - and think of buying a small one for the kitchen that will also become a themed one on which I'm going to hang tiny cupcakes, soda cans, kitchen ustensils, etc.

As for the one of the dining room, I don't know what theme to make but think of something like travel or maybe movie stars - I found a bunch of great ornament ideas on Amazon.

Obviously, we can make themed trees for the bedrooms also: I've even seen fashion related ornaments which would great in an adult bedroom. Barbie ornaments or toy ornaments for a kids bedroom and Teddy Bear ornaments for a baby's room.

Possibilities are endless, it only takes that you make decision on the kind of tree you want to decorate and stick to it for years to come as it also will become your own Christmas tradition.
