The best advice I got was to paint a full sheet of paper the color you are thinking about using and place it in your room . With the size of the paper you will be able to see if it causes too much activity in the room or if it washes out the other furnishings in the room. It is a good idea in my opinion and I have used it when I have to make the decision on color.
You can purchase a test size paint container for less than a dollar at most paint stores.

It can be very difficult choosing the right the color to paint a room. When choosing a color it is important to keep in mind that you will be stuck with it for a long time. One thing to look at first is the furniture in the room. If you are not going to change it get a paint that will look nice with whats already in the room. A shade that is close to white usually goes great in any room. If your painting someone's bedroom, I recommend getting the person that sleeps in that room their favorite color of paint, or one that they will be happy with. Its important that you get a color that people won't make fun of when they visit.

I have actually never chosen what color to paint a room! Up until 5 years ago we always rented and couldn't choose. When we bought this house, our rooms were all already painted a light brown that I kind of like.

If we decided to paint, I think I would choose the paint color based on what would go with our furniture and paintings. We have paintings that I inherited from my grampa. It is nice to be able to display them, so I would make sure the paint wasn't going to clash with them. The paintings are of a river and greenery and we live in the desert, so it is nice to have them. The rest of the living room is all wood paneling or light brown paint and wood or black furniture. It all blends well. I would be leery of ruining that.

I like the idea the other poster had, about holding up the paint sample board in the room and seeing if it goes with everything or not.

First of all, I will choose color that is soft and calming. I usually pick cream color or soft blue and do not intend to change. These colors are calming and we don't get bored easily. My furniture are very basic with woodsy colors so shades of white and cream work perfectly.

Well you pick what you like, paint in a single room can always be changed. You have to basically pick up tones in the room. As I have oriental rugs in the rooms I always try to pick up on a color in the rug. Then add to that the furniture and how it fits in with the rest of the house.
