How do you create back links?

I am active both here and at webanswers.com. At webanswers, there is a tutorial for building back links for my answers to get more exposure. The problem is that it confuses me. Can you read this and maybe break it down for me in language I can understand?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The article on webanswers you link to is talking about how search engines such as google choose the order in which pages appear when searching for a given term. In simple terms the way that works is that first there is the original page, in their case a webanswers page dealing with "infatigo". From there the search engine chooses that page's rank, that is the spot it appears in when the term "infatigo" is searched for, based on how many other pages link to that page using the word "infatigo" as part of the link (the "anchor text" is the text you click on when clicking a link).

The article then goes on to explain various ways in which you can affect the search rank of a given page by going around to other pages discussing "infatigo" and Linking Back to the original webanswers page.

To use this very mahalo question as an example we would use the phrase "Back Linking". When you google for that right now Wikipedia's page shows up first. This is because more pages link to wikipedia's page using that phrase as their link than any other page.

The actual mechanics of back linking are actually extremely simple, it's nothing more than creating a link to a webpage using a specific word or phrase as the anchor text. For example in standard HTML I would back link to this page by creating a link which, when formatted properly appears like this:Back Links . Whenever I place that line of code somewhere that allows HTML linking and create a link back to this page I have just Back Linked to here.

This function is also how the phenomenom of "Google Bombing" works, taking a relatively unused or extremely specific word or phrase and creating many dozens of links to a specific page across the internet in order to boost the target page to the top of google's results. Google Bombing, the abuse of how back linking is used to determine search rankings, is what lead to the old joke of typing "miserable failure" into google and having President George W. Bush's official website as the first rank.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You look for people asking or talking about this and comment leave a comment on their blog or send them a message which would include the link to your full answer on web answers.
