How do you clutter clear at your home? How often do you clutter clear? What is your story?

Tip for best answer: M$0.12
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I keep a basket in every room to throw clutter in, and put it away when the baskets get full! A cluttered environment creates stress for me, which is ironic since I run a secondhand business from my home.

I often have clutter everywhere that isn't even my family's stuff! (Think of Fred Sanford's house!) My method of dealing with this clutter is to shove it all in my big plastic storage tubs and stack them out of the way in a vacant bedroom until I'm ready to deal with it. Even secondhand merchandise isn't moving very well, which shows how bad the economy is.

Currently I'm trying to rid my house of my own clutter, too, since I hope to move soon. I recently sold all my leftover secondhand clutter to my flea-marketer brother for his own sales to make room for all of our own stuff I have to drag out of the closets after 20 years! Big rummage sale at my house next week, folks!

Japanese Kaizen technique insist that housekeeping be done each day. Housekeeping is key to eliminating waste. Your business will run more smooth, if you houseclean, 45 minutes each day. Try it. You will notice how your business seems to get more streamlined.

Your basket approach is interesting... I might have to try that. Do you throw clutter in there first, or do you do "sweeps" of a room and instead of sorting/throwing away, you just put it in the basket until later?

I throw the clutter in as it accumulates in the room; I usually pick up the previous day's clutter in the morning and put it in the basket. Some of the clutter stays in the basket because it's used in that room, but if it belongs in another room then I put it away when the basket begins to overflow, usually once a week or so.

My clutter-clearing involves semi-annual purges. I'm not great at that whole "clean-15-minutes-a-day" strategy. I usually decide it's time to clean when I can't find things, or when I can't comfortably make it to the other side of the room without stepping on/around something.

Like, this is pretty standard for a pre-purge cleaning.

I'm actually trying to get rid of stuff and strategize my cluttering to prevent this from happening. Like, a trash can and shelf or table by the front door to collect the mail, receipts, my work things, etc. A trash can and hamper by the bathroom and bedroom to collect trash and - hopefully - clothes. Most of the stuff on my floor is just trash and clothes, but I do have a few tax papers left over, a chair that needs to be returned to the living room, a printer I never use... etc.

This weekend is looking like a good time to clean up, plus I'm moving soon, so a gigantic trip to Goodwill may be in order.

It's a gradual process. I do enjoy a clean room, but one day I put my pants down next to the hamper instead of in it, and I put the mail on the floor by the end of the bed... and then the next day I'm looking for something in my purse and all the receipts collect on a part of the floor and I don't have enough time to throw them away... gradually, I begin to notice that my room's not clean anymore, and then I'm having to step around little piles to get to my bathroom. Then I start getting annoyed, and purge again. It's a cycle, with me.

It could be worse. I could hoard everything and never, ever throw anything away.

How can people stand to live in clutter? Does it make them feel comfortable? To me, it is annoying.
