How do you care for a hamster pet?

After so many pleading, begging and crying. My sister’s daughter finally got her rodent pet. She has been overly excited about it and has even ignored the other house pets. The last time my sister checked on the hamster, it looked fat and lazy. Do they always look like this? Or does is this a sign of overweight and lack of exercise? How can she help her daughter take proper care of the hamster?

These are tips on how to take care of a hamster:

1. The cage of your hamster should be away from drafts and out of direct sunlight. Choose a spot in the house where you will frequently visit your hamster.

2. Place a cover the cage foor with a 2-inch layer of bedding. Pine shaving are considered the best because they are absorbent and nontoxic.

3. Be sure you have a clean water bottle attached to the cage at a height where the spout is reachable by the hamster but don't touch the bedding. If it gets wet it can rot and cause your hamster to get sick so wash and refill it daily.

4. Provide many chew toys like cardboard tubes found inside rolls of toilet paper and paper towels. It is best to attach hamster wood chews to the side of the cage.

5. Make a box for your hamster to sleep in by cutting a 2-inch doorway into a small, closed cardboard box. Put the box in a far corner of the cage. The hamster will fill the box with bedding and chewed-up pieces of cardboard from the toilet paper tubes and will use the box as a bedroom. He will not urinate on it so you can use it for several months before replacing it.

6. Feed your hamster commercially-prepared hamster-food mix once or twice a day. Give it also fresh fruits and vegetables all year-round. When introducing new foods, first feed small portions so his system can get used to them.

7. Exercise your hamster by putting an exercise wheel in her cage and let her exercise outside her cage inside specially designed plastic hamster ball which you can buy at pet stores. Close the doors to your bedroom, take her out of her cage and let her run around in the hamster ball.

8. Wash the cage of your hamster once a week by removing the hamster to a safe location and dip the cage in water that has a few drops of household disinfectant added to it. Wipe out any debris, dry the inside and add clean bedding before replacing the hamster.

9. Remove uneaten fruits and vegetables after two days for fresh foods can turn moldy can make the hamster sick.

10. Never bathe the hamster because they are capable of cleaning themselves.

11. Take your hamster with you or find someone to take care of him if you are going on vacation for more than three days.
