Another factor that allows conspiracies to work is some kind of unity of vision. A passion for a certain religious or political point of view, or a strongly united economic interested. Even then most conspiracies are not meant to be secret forever, only until a certain level of power is achieved.
To successfully fake a moon landing, you would have to fool thousands of scientists and engineers who worked on the project, most of whom aren't particularly political. So many people worked on the project, and so many more followed the details closely, that the shear scope of any such conspiracy would lead to inevitable defeat.
Anything's possible, of course, but a successful moon landing is far easier to believe than a successful conspiracy that would have had to involve so many people.
