By the sanctuary, I assume you mean Ezio's room in the Villa. So if you go to the second floor of the villa, there is a hallway that leads between his mother's room and the walkway above Uncle Mario's study. Off this hallway is a doorway that leads to a path up to Ezio's room with the portraits of his targets there.
