How do those super fur removing pet brushes work & is there any proof that they don't cause long term damage??

You know what I'm talking about.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think you're talking about devices like the Furminator (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751965 and http://www.furminator.com/faqs.cfm) The Furminator uses teeth to pull out dog or cat hair from their coats before shedding. ConsumerReports says that the Furminator does not remove more hair than a regular brush, or than other super-brushes. But some dog owners enjoyed using the product.

A local news stations (WZVN) cautions that the Furminator is only to be used on short-haired animals, not long-haired ones, reporting that it rips out long hairs and "does more harm than good."

Web discussion boards, like http://bbs.sitstay.com/showflat.php?Cat=1,2,3,4,9&Board=grooming&Number=161829&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart= seem to show a good experience with the device.

I have a long haired cat that sheds and drives me crazy. I bought this comb for her and it is the best thing I have found so far. They make them for dogs also so I recommended one to my brother-in-law, he loves it too! Just takes a few minutes to get the hang of it, then once you do, get that garbage can ready cause your gonna have lots of hair!!

For long haired dogs and cats, I've always found that shaving them is the best thing for them and you. I had a Persian and I kept her shaved most of the time. It takes a little getting used to, but it was so nice. Just don't shave a cat or dog that will be outdoors for long periods in the winter.

As to grooming advice, matted hair causes much more damage than any brush could (in my experience).

Only because you are looking at what you think the cat should look like and not the comfort of the cat. It also reduces hair balls and never bothered the cat (after the initial shaving). It's like shaving your head.

Another tip for removing fur off your clothes and furniture that I use all the time is to take a rubber glove (like the kind the sell for washing dishes) and rub it over the cloth. The hair sticks to it like glue and you can just peel it off and throw it in the garbage and the glove is ready to go for the next time.

The best tip I've ever seen for removing pet hair from clothes is to take a FedEx envelope pouch with the sticker on the back and tap it on your clothes like this:

Daily Candy talks about it here.
