If you do have a religious reason - such as you would rather your kids know the gifts come from the kindness and goodness of the human heart and not from a mythological bearded Santa, follow the guidelines of your religion
There was a sweet episode in one of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books where the family is snowed in, so no presents will be forthcoming, and the family explains to the youngest daughter that Santa IS "real", they follow up this revelation by explaining "Santa" is when ever someone is kind to someone else, so not only can anyone be Santa Claus, but it can be Christmas all year!

M$I know how assertive kids are so while they're too young to comprehend, I am giving them the chance to experience fantasy. Anyway when they grow up, they will learn that Santa Claus doesn't really exist though for us Catholics, we believe that it's St. Nicholas and as a kid that I was, I believe that Santa Claus really would visit every home and would bring gifts to children though it's just the parents who just put gifts inside the Christmas stockings that are hung mostly on doors. Just let your children believe that there’s Santa Claus for now because in time, when they reach 8 or 9, they will understand that the true Santa Claus is you or their father – or whoever that gives them Christmas gifts. Besides, it’s a healthy thing for kids to think that Santa Claus exist because from there, their generosity would be cultivated in them. It feels good to give esp. to the needy people.

M$Kids grow up so quickly these days, that it doesn't do any harm to let them keep their childhood fantasies for as long as it suits them.
If they start to ask questions about Santa Claus when they are a little older, a good way to explain the situation without completely disillusioning them is to say that Santa Claus is so busy now that there are so many more children in the world, that he has had to get the Mums and Dads to help him out with his deliveries.
I can remember my mother telling me this and it just seemed to make sense. In any case, can anyone say for sure that there is no Santa Claus?
