how do most writers figure out a plot? do they use an outline or do they think those are contrived?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are so many different ways to develop a plot that it is important, as a writer, to find out what works best for you.

Some writers will let the direction of the story influence what the plot is going to become.

If you plan on writing a novel and don't have a plot it may work best to just keep writing. Let the story unfold as you continue developing the characters. Once you finally reach a point where you find your plot you can always go back and make changes.

Other writers will spend hours even days writing and re-writing a story outline with everything planned out.

When doing an outline develop the character history as you work to find the plot. Many times you character's past history will dictate a plot idea what will give you direction for your writing.

Personally I'd recommend the book No Plot? No Problem! https://store.lettersandlight.org/merchandise/no-plot-no-problem-book
It's a great help!
