How do libraries dispose of old volumes?

When books are worn, how are they disposed of?
Tip for best answer: M$1.76
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It depends on the library and the policies of their library system, if any.

My husband works for a library system here in Alberta, and various libraries have different methods of disposal. Many libraries sell old volumes that have been removed from circulation in their book sales, which also include books which have been donated to the library and are unsuitable for addition to the library collection. Other times, books are given away to charitable organizations, though this seems to be less common, or adopted by librarians. Some of the librarians save books for artists, like me, who use them in altered book or mixed media art projects. Some are relegated to landfills, though that seems to be rare. Many are returned to the system headquarters and are eventually burned, if they are unable to be dealt with in a sale or donation capacity.

I have quite often wondered about this myself. One just cannot imagine just how many millions of volumes are outdated, or are just not in use anymore. It must be a hard decision to have them burned though.

I think for many of the librarians, who respect books so very much, it seems more dignified to burn them rather than have them end up in a landfill with trash. Not quite like book burnings meant to censor books, more a cremation of a respected friend. I also know it's incredibly hard for them, I once had one try to push way more books on me than I needed for my art, because she saw it as a much better "end" for the books. Truth is though, libraries can only hold so many volumes, and some books, particularly pop fiction, just don't need to hang around forever. They may need twenty copies of the latest Stephen King when it first comes out, but after a year, they only need one or two.

A few of the libraries near me have book sales like you mentioned - I LOVE stocking up on books for a quarter apiece!

Removing or disposing of book in a library(in library term is WEEDING) depends on the policy written on their Collection Development Policy (CDP). Some large libraries donate books to smaller libraries. Some can be sell. If it is really worn out, it can be burned. But if a book or a collection is very important/rare and is already worn out, they cannot be burned or donated but are archived for preservation.

Hello, I'm just gonna give a good answer but make it short & simple.

Every library has a different way. Some libraries give it to charities & some recycle them. Althought the best way is just to ask them.

Hope I got the best answer because of my simplicity!

Thanx!
