How do I write a resume

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are a few ways to write a resume. One is a skills resume; another is an experience resume; or some combination of the two.

A skills resume is really good if you don't have much experience in particular jobs or in the job you are applying to. You create the resume and highlight some of the important skills that employers want to see such as communication skills, leadership skills, etc.

An experience resume lists your jobs, the dates and your responsibilities. However, this alone will not tell an employer what you can do for them, which is why you would be hired.

So a better bet is some combination of the two because employers want to know where and when you have worked but also how your skills will translate into their company. There are many websites that can help you create a resume. If you are going to pull together your skills, then you can find a website with a good list of questions that will help you figure out what your skills are.

This website http://www.career.vt.edu/JOBSEARC/Resumes/formats.htm has examples of both types (the website uses the term chronological for experience - pretty much the same thing)

Mahalo also has a page on resumes calledHow to Write a Resume.

Keep in mind that resumes can be scanned into software that searches it for relevant keywords. If you don't have the keywords, you may not get an interview despite good qualifications.

Resumes should also always be sent with a cover letter. The cover letter is a chance for you to really show how you are a good fit for the company. You should be sure to do your research on the company first and write a cover letter that highlights your skills matched to their needs (without repeating all the information in the resume.)

How you write your resume will depend on what it will be used for. While the basic outline of your resume may follow a template or general guideline, your content will be specific and customized. If you are a student getting ready to enter the work world, you will want to focus on your grades and credentials, as well as your internship or externship experience. Extracurricular are also relevant as they represent qualities such as camaraderie and leadership so list them and be prepared to discuss how these non conventional skills can be used on the job. If you are a seasoned professional, your most relevant work experience will factor in, and education should be summarized toward the end of the resume.

Job databases like Monster.com and CareerBuilder offer various templates, tips and tools for writing a resume on their respective websites. Some also offer to critique or evaluate a resume for free, or for a fee.
