How do I use my Mac when the start screen never goes away?

The grey screen with the Apple logo and the circular timer wont go away, its like it cannot load the system. I have tried turning it on and off and all that and left it for hours, nothing happens. I am a Mac noob and would love some advice, maybe some button combination like good old Microsoft??

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to a post by 'Topher15' at forums.macrumors.com, about the grey screen with the Apple logo and the circular timer wont go away, he suggested that:

"Press the Power button, and immediately press and hold down the Command key and the S key as the machine starts up. This boots you into Single-user mode and you should see white text appear on the screen.
When you see the # command prompt, type /sbin/fsck –fy ) and hit Return. This could take 15 minutes or so—or even longer...
If and when you see the message “File System was modified,” repeat the step above again, and again, until
you finally, hopefully, see a message saying, “no problems were found.” When that happens type reboot and hit
Return again. Good Luck"

Put in the system CD, power it down with the power button. Unplug it for 10 seconds. Replug it, and restart it. Hold down C and it will use the system on the CD and you can poke around and see what's going on. You should also let us know what kind of Mac you have.

Since it is pretty new, let the Geniuses work for you. They are so nice and have all the resources right there. I highly recommend it.

you can restore it to its factory condition but to do that you need a CD which usually come with Mac. And also you should know that it will delete all you data that you have on your laptop. On my laptop which has windows vista, to do that, first I restart laptop then push F8 button and there you can choose restore. I think it is like that.

Starting up from the CD and restoring the system won't delete all your data. It does an archive and install and all your data is kept in pristine condition.

is anything plugged in to it ?

Like maybe a USB drive or a flash drive ?

Try 'verbose' mode

press and hold Command-v and you will see a lot of text that tells you what it is doing, from there it may be possible to figure out what is preventing correct startup
