How do I troubleshoot a dishwasher that doesn't drain?
Our dishwasher has stopped draining and there is a pool of water in the bottom of it. If we run it again it will overflow. I have removed the screen on the bottom drain to check for any obstructions and there were none. I have also removed the drain pipe and made sure it is clean, and it is. All drain systems in the kitchen sink, which it is connected to, are properly functioning. Is there a serviceable pump in a dishwaser that can be tested and replaced if necessary? Hello, I work as a maintenance person for a few apartment building in my area. I currently service washers that are the Hot Point variety. But your problem seems very familiar. You will have to excuse my spelling with this one. Your solenoid has quit on you. Seems more difficult than it seams. It is really easy to do with a few hand tools, flashlight, and adventurous spirit.
The solenoid is a sort of magnet that is engaged when the timer reaches the draining stage. This part is the quick 'thumping'? sound you hear when it is engaged.
Normally you will find it up front where you can reach it, and not way in the back. You can take your chances and remove a part and then go searching for it. Hey everyone learns differently. But I would find the model number on your Kenmore and go searching on the web looking for a solenoid. After you find what you think your looking for your free to purchase it or perhaps take a quick look under the washer to see if you can spot it.

According to homehighlight.org, there are 7 things you should check on a dishwasher that doesn't drain:
First, check the air gap of the sink, near the faucet, and unclog it if necessary. Unscrew the top cap and rinse it well.
Second, check the drain hose leading from the air gap to the garbage disposal. Clean it out and reattach it.
Third, if your dishwasher uses a belt to drive the pump, and the pump doesn't seem to be working, try replacing the drive belt. It may be broken or stretched out.
Fourth, for models that have both a wash impeller and a drain impeller, the drain impeller might be broken, either at the shaft or at the blades. Replace the broken parts of the drain impeller.
Fifth, some dishwashers use a drain solenoid to drain the water. This might be stuck. Try loosening it by hand. If that doesn't work, replace the pump assembly.
Sixth, perhaps the motor is stuck. Try getting the motor going by spinning it by hand. If that doesn't work, replace the motor. Finally, if the wash timer is busted, you'll have to replace it.
If you've tried all, or most, of these options and the problem persists, it may be time to call in an expert.
