How do I treat pain when breastfeeding?

I am actually in agony when I nurse my three week old. At his one week check up, the doctor told me that he had a very mild case of thrush and gave me medication for him. I expressed my concern since I am nursing but the doctor said that the thrush was so mild that it wouldn't be a problem. He finished the medication a few days ago and since then, the pain that I feel when he nurses has gotten worse. I am wondering if it is possible that I now have thrush in my breasts. I tried to nurse him a few minutes ago and it hurt so badly on my left side that it was completely unbearable and I had to stop. Is there any way to treat this at home or do I have to call my doctor?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If it is thrush- a good, safe non-disruptive to your life or the babies health treatment is to increase your intake of plain yoghurt. When I have had problems with thrush in the past, or my babies have- eating plain yoghurt when I woke up and before I went to sleep as well as after each meal helped me and a lot of my friends.

Organic yoghurt with no sugar or sweetners added is best, you can get it from health food stores and some good supermarkets in the states. If you hate it unsweetened, add honey (but just for moms not babies with honey). The problem with the sugar and sweetners is that it makes thrush much much worse, so anything with sugar in it should also be cut down- sweets in general, alcoholic drinks and canned sodas make thrush grow and breed.

If your breasts are sore because you are decreasing the feeds or trying to wean your child, I used cabbage leaves in my bra- I didn't find it that comfortable, but I think the coolness of the cabbage helps your sore breasts feel better.

Good luck, this kind of problem is frustrating because you are doing the best thing in the world by breastfeeding your child and it should be a wonderful, nurturing, bonding with your child not a painful experience.

You can apply an ice-pack wrapped in a soft cloth or a lanolin product to rub on.

These treatments are appropriate for general nipple soreness when you first start breastfeeding. This is the type of discomfort that is usually caused by the baby incorrectly latching onto the breast. This is NOT what I am experiencing. This is my second baby so I am familiar with the typical soreness that occurs. This is far worse. I am concerned that since my baby had thrush, he gave it to me, and that I will perhaps now give it back to him!

• Painful Nipples
• Engorgement
