M$R - rest
I - icing ( this should be done right after you have sprained your ankle, to reduce or prevent swelling, if you haven't place ice on it immediately and it starts to swell don't put ice, instead use hot compress 15-20 minutes to reduce the inflammation or swelling and to decrease pain because heat can increase blood flow to the site)
C - compression, try to compress your ankle by putting elastic bandage
E- elevation. Elevate the ankle. When you are lying down put pillows behind your ankle to elevate it.
If you are in pain constantly after doing this and swelling persists you have to consult the physician so you can have your ankle x-rayed to rule out fractures and physician can also prescribe medicines for your pain.

M$I voted NBA, not because the answers weren't good, as they reflected conventional wisdom, but because I disagree with conventional wisdom. I stopped icing injuries years ago, preferring to allow the body to address the injuries in whatever way it will. As long as I stop using the affected part for a few days, the swelling and inflammation are typically gone completely by the second day. I believe that swelling and inflammation are processes that are part of the healing, so I don't interfere.
