I share pictures with my family all around the world through Photoonweb: http://www.photoonweb.com . I find that it has several advantages: It is a free application with free webspace to upload quite a lot pictures. It automatically compresses the images prior to uploading them. You can also add descriptions and choose a design template. You can give free access to your albums for which people simply follow a link. As the individual images won’t be indexed by Google it provides a reasonable degree of privacy.
