How do I learn to do a backflip?

Safety first.
Tip for best answer: M$3.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This may not be a popular answer, but I am a gymnastics instructor, so please learn how to do a backflip from a professional gymnastics instructor that can spot you properly. Everybody has a different level of innate ability to do flips. In my opinion, videos are not adequate to learn how to do a backflip. They are good for background info so you know what you will be asked to do, but not a substitute for real live instruction. Rarely can a person learn to flip by themselves without experienced spotters. Inexperienced spotters are NOT safe to use. In fact they can be just the opposite.

Please do not use the belt loops of your pants to spot as you can injure yourself if the loops break or the spotter can injure their fingers when you flip and their fingers become twisted in the belt loops.

Some martial arts academies also have instructors that can spot safely and they have flooring that is padded (as are the gymnastics floors which usually have springs beneath them).

Enjoy your training:)

I haven't done one of these since I was a teenager, so keep in mind all the precautions and play it safe.
I found a good video that will show you how to do a backflip from a gymnastics class.

What people often work towards with the backflip, is to eventually do back handsprings. I found this video that has some great stretches and exercises that will also help with the basic backflip! Enjoy!

What you need to do is regularly use Old Father William's ointment throughout your younger years. It only costs a shilling a box.

-------

"You are old," said the youth, "as I mentioned before,
And you have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door --
Pray, what is the reason for that?"

"In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
"I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment -- one shilling a box --
Allow me to sell you a couple?"

Hey there! ;)

There's a Mahalo article that talks about How to do a backflip. You can read it to see the full details on how you will be able to do backflips.

Before anything else, you must start warming up. Leg and arm stretches is a good start. You must also practice the bridge position. This is done stretching you arm on your backwards to the floor while pushing your hips to the top while your two feet remains on the ground.

In order to perform backflips, you must practice with two people that could assist you. Also, choosing a soft spot for your first attempts will be advisable too. These assistants must stand on your side and hold you (preferable on your your side, or the belt loops of your pants).

Once these two spotters are in the position, you can start pumping your arms legs. You can repeat this until you're ready to jump backwards. Once you're ready count with the spotters so they'll be guiding you the properly. They should be helping you rotate at first. Once you completed your first attempt, you'll see what you need to improve and what you must do for your next attempt. Just keep repeating this pattern until you can perfectly do it with two spotters.

Then, once you're okay, try having just one spotter. Repeat the entire process I told you and when you're okay with having one spotter to guide you, you can try it alone.

Practice makes perfect so keep practicing to be better at this. Good luck!
