How do I know how much wool I need to knit a scarf?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It depends what size needles, what type of yarn, and what type of stitch. Like a thin yarn on a large needle you could get away with a lot less for a lacy look. A chunky yarn on a fairly small needle can eat up yarn surprisingly fast.
I've a friend who is like a knitting/spinning goddess (or possibly a bit insane)... She's at http://www.divinebird.com/ You could email her and she could probably give you ideas and specs for anything under the sun and get you hooked on exotic and cozy yarns you've never heard of before. Plus she has links to other knitting sites for ideas and inspiration.
Good luck!

M$If I recall correctly, my roommates that knitted briefly were surprised how much yarn they went through making their scarves.
