I highly recommend using something that is not a word, like "eh eh" or "baaah". Bark Busters is a great in-home training approach that teaches people to use "dog language" and show that you are the alpha, not the dog. This approach does not use any physical punishment, but uses a tactic that gets your dog's attention, and then you can reward your dog after it stops doing the behavior. It is positive reinforcement and this doesn't allow tempting of misuse of a shock collar or a pinch collar, which can cause damage. Visit www.barkbusters.com for more information, or look around for another training system that doesn't use actions that have potential to harm your dog. A pinch collar can crush a dog's trachea if misused, and shock collars, when not used properly, are just as useless as telling your dog "it's alright, don't bark".

Redirecting the dog's attention is the key here - and this answer is in the right direction. Negative reinforcement will not be very effective - typically the dog is barking as a part of a ritual or excited behavior (protecting the house or you - or alerting you that someone is there) Additionally - your dog probably needs more social skills - safe and controlled positive exposure to kids, people and other dogs where they learn that they can be calm and friendly and not need to get excited and or bark at people. Please consult a certified dog trainer for proper canine socialization classes and find one that uses positive training methods (clicker training). Good luck. It's never too late to provide good dog obedience training for your pooch.

1 1/2 years is a little bit late to be training a dog, but you can always try the usual techniques. Start with a spray bottle of water and a firm "No!" every time she does it, then move along to a pinch collar, and if all else fails you can get a shock collar.

it is never to late to work on training a dog and a pinch and/or shock collar, is not the answer as inflicting pain is never the answer.

I would say a training shock collar with a remote. When she shows bad behavior you can send her a little reward. They are like $50.00 and a useful training aid that does'nt hurt the dog just gets their attention.

Remote dog training collars have been proven safe, comfortable, and effective for both small dogs and large dogs. Use the electronic dog collar consistently and correctly to control many misbehaviors that your pet exhibits or to teach any basic obedience commands.

Unfortunately, too many people do not use a shock collar properly, and this can lead to abuse.

1 1/2 well this maybe a behavior problem. Why are they barking at the children are they teasing her or have they been mean to her. Remember dogs respond to human behavior and they remember what we do to them.

The spray bottle of water and the firm "No" is a good effective approach. Remember she wants to please you. With my own Lab she remembers the word "No" very well.

Dogs like people have behavior problems that need to be corrected. Pretty much when she was a puppy someone thought this was cute, now in adult hood it is no longer cute and is going to be harder to break her from the behavior. I have found "Petsmart" trainers are excellant sources of information.
