When I was first married, many moons ago, my husband was an auto mechanic. He often came home with motor oil, gasoline or diesel fuel on his clothing. What worked best for me was to rub mechanic's hand cleaner into the stains before laundering them. It worked well, as I recall. If I missed a spot and washed and dried the clothes, I was out of luck.
