How do I get a college scholarship?

Are there any tips or tricks to applying for university scholarships? Can scholarships pay for my entire college education, including tuition and living expenses?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are several tricks to getting a college scholarship. The first one is prepare yourself as well as you can to make yourself as competitive as possible. Most scholarships are competitions. If you want to win at a given competition, prepare. Since most of us are not athletically gifted, we must use our brains to get scholarships. Get the highest grades possible and take the most demanding courses you can handle.
Look for scholarships in every place possible: the high school guidance counselor’s office is a great place to start; a newspaper that caters to high school or college students; the bulletin boards at a local college; the college counselor’s office or office of financial aid. There are also scholarships available online, but many of these are simply scams that will promise you access to information that is just as easily available in other formats. Be very, very selective if you choose to pay for a so-called “scholarship search.” Many of these are also scams.
