How do I fix clicking and crackling audio on my laptop?

I recently bought a Dell Studio 1537 Laptop and there is intermittent crackling when playing music or other audio. I've read that this is a common problem with the Dells and a certain driver will fix it, but I am unable to find one that fixes it. Any ideas?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you haven't already, you could download the audio drivers from Dell's support site:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/downloads_splash?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~mode=popup&file=271539

Assuming here you're using Vista, if not you can use their support site to pick a different OS. It's generally best to get the drivers directly from the manufacturer, but if that doesn't help, you could try tracking down the specific manufacturer of the sound hardware itself, then visit their site and see if you can find their generic "reference" drivers, which might overcome whatever is failing with the Dell driver.

You didn't specify whether you are using external speakers or listening to the sound through the laptop internal speakers. If you are hearing this from a set of external speakers, then you should try another set of speakers. If you are hearing this from your internal speakers then there may be something wrong with your laptop, and you should definitely contact Dell.
