What are some Untapped niches for an online business?

I learnt that by having a website based around a particular niche you reduce the amount of competitors you have and it even puts you on the front pages of Google.

But the problem is that most common topics (such as Software, Fashion, Fitness and Health) are already highly saturated. How do you go about getting a niche with less competition, but still profitable? Can you give me some examples of niches that are not so common, but yields benefit?

HELP pls!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The niche that works for you will involve whatever you are passionate about. The exact answer depends on you. But a few examples:

Don't start a site about apples: start one about granny smith pie recipes.
Don't start a baseball cards site: start one about Topps cards from 1964 to 1978.
Don't start a site about reptiles: start one about red eared slider turtles
Don't start a fan site about zoos: start one about the zoo in your town.

I used to work for a company that sold durable medical equipment.* We made our reputation by only selling about 9 items: blood sugar meters from the two best companies (Lifescan and Bayer) in that sector and the strips and lancets that go with them. Every time we tried something outside our core competency (sugar free candies, erection pumps, automatic defibrillators) we would have to give it up within months, because explaining these new items to our customers tied up our phone staff.

* Durable medical equipment is anything that medicare or insurance pays for, designed to be used in the home. For instance, bath tub safety rails, wheelchairs, hospital beds, lift chairs, splints, ostomy supplies, bandages, wound dressings, oh yes.. and blood sugar meters.

Yes, people seem to misunderstand the word "niche".

I'll throw one out their for you. There are a lot of outdoor adventure sports. They do have significant representation online, yet nowhere near that of Software or Fashion. Now outdoor adventure sports could still be considered too sizable a niche, so you may want to narrow it down even further. Let's use fishing as an example. Fishing products are relatively cheap to manufacture, their production can be outsourced, and their profit margins are large (i.e. fishing lures, lead weights, fishing line). Moreover, internet competition in the fishing market isn't as fierce as other sectors. Fishing still yields a benefit as there is a massive online fishing community: there are forums, messageboards, meetup groups, etc. Fisherman are constantly in communication about tips and hints: Success rates with specific lures, good fishing spots, and most applicable to you, "the best fishing deals". I think the key to your question is that you really need to do some research in order to find a particular niche that is suitable to you--a niche you can improve upon. You should offer some sort of solution with your online business that other competitors within the niche do not offer. Hope this brainstorm helps!

I typed fishing lures into yahoo search and came uo with pages of places. I even seen a place for antique fishing lures. In actuallity the sports market is one of the hardest to break into.

youtube and a winning personality with an interesting concept to entertain people while NOT using very much of someone else's material (unless you have their permission).

This guy has made over $100,000 from being an outraged and slightly outlandish concerned citizen.

If someone were to think of this why wouldn't they do it themselves instead of giving away a good idea. Are you offering a partnership?

I had the same thought, but then I figured, if you can't ask in the Mahalo community, it's not Mahalo.
