How do I create an Ecommerce website and integrate/implement it with a ERP/CRM/SCM system?
I work for a corporate/business consulting firm. We are entering a deal with a medium-sized business to help them with a number off cost saving/revenue boosting initiatives. One of these is helping them develop an E-Commerce site to generate additional sales. They simply don't have the manpower capacity currently to get this done without our help.
Since I have some basic tech knowledge, my boss has put me in charge of running this ECommerce project, and expects me to deliver on-time.
The company is a vendor for various products. They currently generate revenue through bidding for sales contracts with various organizations. They would like to sell their product offering online. They have about 4500 SKUs they want to sell.
Currently, they have a very crappy, outdated Ecommerce website that has their products up there, but generates no revenue since it looks so terrible and has limited functionality.
Our main goals are as follows:
Upgrade to a better looking site with more functionality
Generate useful metric data for marketing from the website - meaning Integrate the site with an ERP or CRM Business Intelligence system
Also, we need to integrate our back end processes with the site - so integrate with a POS/Inventory system, so somebody in the company could add a product or change pricing on the POS system, and it would be reflected on the website
I have never done a project like this before, and am honestly overwhelmed. While I have good ideas on what the finished product should be, I am not sure the best process to get there.
I have some specific questions I need answered.
1) Should I build the site first, and then have the ERP/CRM/SCM/BI tools incorporated into it later? Or should I get the databases in place first, and then build the site around the system? Should they be implemented at the same time? What would be the most cost friendly option?
2) How do I integrate the website with the CRM/SCM business intelligence tools? Who would be able to help plan and implement this? The guy building the website or the software vendor?
3) What type of person do I need to get who can incorporate the website into our inventory system?
Basically, if you were in my situation, what steps, and what people will need to be involved to get the desired end result?
I have tried looking into Oracle, SAP, Microsoft Business Solutions, etc...but they have so many service offerings and products, its completely overwhelming. I have no idea which ones would apply to my needs.
I need a start to finish on building an Ecommerce site integrated with the rest of company operations.
Thanks!

M$Your customer should not be hiring a general purpose business consultant for a task like this! This is a major IT project that should be handled by an IT consulting firm which has a lot of experience doing similar projects. It is not something that you can just pick up or hire a couple of programmers to do.
You are attracting a lot of silly answers here because $18 is more than most Mahalo questions. But, to get this kind of project started you are talking a major business budget.
Your boss has bitten off much more than he or you can chew and you should tell him that at once.

M$I like to Give you a site that I found when I was Searching Net.
I just found this site that offers a free webcam chat script (similar to chatroulette). it's very simple to add to your site, you just have to copy and paste a few html lines ... check it out: http://faceflow.com/chatroulette-clone-script
You can use this with your Ecommerce site to Chat with clients.
You would like this.
Thanks

M$2. You need to find out if the CRM/SCM tools have an API for any specific programming languages or if you can access the data that is used for them by directly connecting to their data sources. The software vendor may have some recommendations on e-commerce solutions for you. It is very possible that you can have another program that communicates with your CRM/SCM tools that can import/translate the data you need into something that you can use in a web front end.
3. The guy building the website needs to be an actual web developer with skills in the server technology you plan to use (ASP.NET, PHP, RUBY,JAVA) and they will need to have experience integrating with 3rd party applications. It may be best to contract a web application development firm. I used to work for a good one that you can contact at www.typeconnectgo.com They have very experienced and capable developers that specialize in Microsoft ASP.NET.
