How do I choose clothes that fit me and how would I alter them to fit better?

What measurements would a tailor make on me, and how would this correlate to the measurements of the shirt, pants, jacket etc. Where would the cuffs fall in relation to my hand or shoe? I am male, and as you can see from my thumbnail image, rather skinny, with an actual waist size of 27" so I cannot even shop in most men's departments. Boy's departments do not have a good selection, and do not fit well either. Any advice on how to alter ready made clothes would also be appreciated.

I'm a woman who has trouble finding ready made pants that fit perfectly, so I've had some alterations done. Measuring yourself is a pretty easy thing to do. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, you could get a friend to do it for you. The following site has information on how to measure for men's clothing: http://fashion.about.com/cs/menstips/l/blmenmeasure.htm

One easy alteration for pants gaping at the waist is to put a seam in. This article gives you detailed instructions.

However, if there is a big gap there, this won't work. It would probably be better to get a new pair of pants. That article may sound like a lot of work for altering the waist, but it really isn't. The video below gives you a simpler idea of how it is done. He does do it with a sewing machine, but you can do it by hand.

Hemming is also pretty easy. Put on a pair of shoes you might wear with those pants. Then get someone to fold them up where you would like and pin them. Then you can sew it up! See the second video. You can also do it without sewing. Just use Stitch Witchery if the pants aren't very heavy. It's an iron on fabric glue tape, and it's really easy to use. Only thing about that is that sewing it is probably the stronger way to go.

If that looks too intimidating, you might want to find a female friend who knows how to do a seam or go to a tailor. Those two alterations for pants shouldn't be too expensive, unless the pants are so big that they have to do more than that.

Try using GetMySize.com. You can enter your specific body measurements and compare them with clothing added to the website. It's free and simple to use. I really hope more online apparel businesses start using them because I'm really getting sick of not getting the right size clothing online.

Start with assessing your bodytype: Are you broad-shouldered/narrow-waisted? Are you slim? Are you shaped like a pear, smaller on top than on the bottom? Look at fashion magazines for guys and see what types of clothes look like they would flatter your body type.
Next, have a tailor/seamstress/friend measure you. WHen you buy clothes, mae them or have them made for you, remember that you want to have the correct length of arm and leg (whatever is currently fashionable). Shirt necks should never be too tight. Always play up your best feature (slim waist, broad shoulders, tall legs etc. If you have a large stomach do NOT wear pleated pants, for instance.

Easy my friend. you have three options to consider

1. The best way to chose clothes that fit you would be to seek the services of a tailor or seamstress. the tailor or seamstress can measure you and tell you the precise shirt and pants size. i would highly recommend that you let the tailor or seamstress make custom made apparel for you by doing this you would negate having to look for or finding clothes that would fit you. the tailor or dressmaker would make the the apparel exactly how u wish.

2.The next step if you cannot afford a tailor or seamstress to provide u with their expertise is to seek the advice of a sales rep of a apparel store. the sales rep would be able to tell you the type of apparel that would suit your need and would be able to show you your shirt and pants size. for instance the can show u where to look to see the size of the shirt and the pants.

3. online shopping for clothes can be quite easy but you would have to know your pants and shirt sizes. once this is known u can go straight ahead and buy clothes from online apparel stores.

remember it is important to know your pants and shirt size in order to choose clothes that fit you. you can do this by looking on the inside of the shirt or apparel for the information that would state this. usually a little rectangular or square tag embedded in the apparel on the inside. if your going to get it done by a tailor or seamstress u have no problem with the apparel(s) fitting you but if your going to buy ready made shirts or pants you might have problems. if you do you would have to get the tailor or seamstress to alter it for you
