How can I see what is within a specific radius around me on a map.

I'm planning a trip and want to know what destinations are within a specific radius around me. Preferably, I'd like to get this information for free and online. It seems that it cannot be done in Google maps, and the only way to get it in Google Earth is with the Pro version. I'm just not ready to spend $400 for such a simple need. I could simply buy a map and draw a circle with a compass, but that seems so lo-tech.
Tip for best answer: M$0.50
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It can be done online, here is a website that does it with Google maps. http://esa.ilmari.googlepages.com/circle.htm Enter the location in the geocoder box and hit enter, location can be place name or lat/lon. Once you hit enter the map will be centred at the place, enter the radius you want and click recalculate. You get a map you can zoom in on witch the radius circle in a different colour.

I do not have the "Pro" version of Google earth and I am able to do what you say you cannot. Is it possible that you may not be fully informed as to the full functionality of it's interface? Just thinkin'!

I would be ever so grateful if you could give me a step by step of which menus to choose.

I open in direct X mode and punch in the address used for the central point of reference in the upper left side of the start page. After it focuses in on the reference point I simply use the + - scale to view the surrounding area.
