How can I register my dog with the AKC Club?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well, you can get away with losing the paperwork, but you need the registration number in order to register your dog. If you've lost the breeders phone number, you're going to need to contact them somehow. Look through the yellow pages or online. If they were close by... then pop by the home. You need to have the registration number from the litter.
Once you get that number, you can even register online. It's that easy.

I have only had one dog in my life that was AKC registered. I got a Chihuahua puppy who's daddy was #7 in the US, but before my puppy even turned 1 year old, I watched his daddy move from #7 to #1 at the Westminster Dog Show. (he was the #1 smooth coat male Chihuahua in the US in 1994)
Now, in picking a name for the AKC papers, just try to include some of the parents information so you can easily track your dog back to previous winners. Example: my puppy's fathers name was 'Dusky'. His AKC name was 'Dusky Sky at Whitecliff'. My puppy's name was 'Ricky' his name at AKC was 'Whitecliff Dusky's little Ricky'. (Whitecliff was the name of kennel that trained and bred them)
If you want to name you dog Max or Joe, just remember that it's like registering a racehorse name... it needs to be unique. 'Max Over the Rainbow w/ Sprinkles' or 'Decaf Cup o' Joe'.
Just remember that AKC papers are really only important if you plan to show your dog. If you're not planning on doing all that hard work or breeding your dog down the road (personally? I'd leave that for professional breeders) you don't even need the paperwork. What's important is that you know your dog is a purebred by the standards of the AKC.
