How can I protect my credit score?

What are some things I can do to make sure fraudulent reports aren't made against my credit score? What do I do if I find a bad report on my credit score]? Who do I contact?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Many people ask how they can protect their credit score from fraudulent reports or get bad credit removed from their report. Surprisingly removing fraudulent items or bad reports that don't belong to you is relatively easy. The first thing you must do is obtain a copy of your credit report, so that you can check and be sure that these things don't actually belong to you. Then you can either write a letter to all the major credit reporting agencies to explain to them why you think that the charges are not yours. Once the credit dispute is received they have 30 days to investigate the report and get back to you with either an explanation of why it can't be removed or they will remove it and send you an updated report. Another way to do this is simply go to the credit reporting agencies website and file an online dispute, which works the same way as the handwritten dispute. These are extremely easy to do and it keeps your credit report clean of fraudulent reports. However, you must stay vigilant because you never know when a mistake can be made. Additionally, the credit reporting agencies offer credit fraud protection, where your credit is monitored to ensure that no one is using your identification or making fraudulent purchases without your consent.

You can protect your credit score by keeping some important things in mind like making payments on time, having low balance on credit cards etc. If you maintain a good credit history, your score will automatically be high. Keep a track on your credit score at http://www.freecreditscore.com
