How can I keep my hedge free of maple seedlings?

My evergreen hedge seems to be under constant attack from maple seedlings from a nearby red maple. How can I stop them from taking over? I prefer to avoid synthetic herbicides.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Simply place landscaping cloth beneath the hedge and cover with mulch. This will keep the polly noses from sprouting and will also stop other notorious hedge invaders such as poison ivy that often grow unnoticed until pruning time.
