Which HORROR film is the best adaptation of a Stephen King novel?

I say "HORROR" because otherwise everyone would pick "The Shawshank Redemption." (I would.) Or maybe "The Green Mile."

I vote for Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining." While Steven Weber acquitted himself nicely in the TV re-do in '97, he can't hold a candle to Jack. Kubrick's vision was masterful, and the film still gives me the creeps, decades later.

"Cujo" made an impression on me as well, though I think it was the fact that a normally huge and cuddly dog could become such a fearsome beast. My wife still refuses to watch even 5 seconds of the film, based upon the sheer trauma it inflicted on her when it was first released!

I agree strongly with The Shining - one of the truly most disturbing movies I've ever seen. However, an argument must be made for Pet Semetary. It's definitely NOT short on scares. In fact, I remember seeing it in the theater wih my girlfriend at the time - when the hero pulled the curtain in the bathtub away, she screamed SO LOUD! It totally made everyone in the theater laugh and eased the tension, but still - there's something to a movie that will literally make you scream... BTW - it only got scarier from there.
Have fun!!

I just had this debate with my BIL about 2 weeks ago, except the question was overall horror film ever. I feel very strongly that The Shining is the scariest, creepiest, most terrifying movie ever. If I had to pick a second i would go with The Omen, but as far as Stephen King is concerned The Shining takes the cake.

The Internet Movie Database rates The Shining as 3rd scariest by rating, but 2nd by votes.

BTW my BIL thinks The Ring is the scariest movie......not even close i said!!

Stephen King's IT gave me nightmares for weeks when I first saw it. I still can't look at a clown without cringing!
