The process by which plants prepare their own food with the help of chlorophyll, water, sunlight , carbon-di-oxide and mineral salt is called the Photosynthesis. This is done by the plants as follows.
To begin with, the chlorophyll (green pigment) present in plants absorbs energy from sunlight. Carbon-di-oxide as well as water and minerals are also needed for photosynthesis. So the plant breathes in carbon di oxide from the air, and drinks up mineral-rich water from the soil through its roots. Part of the water taken up through the roots is used to make sugar. The rest is given off from the leaves.
Here is a wonderful vedio clipping that explains clearly what is photosynthesis.
