For hardcore gamers, of course I'd recommend XBox. For those who wanted quality graphics plus Blue-ray player, the best bet is PS 3. It will definitely be great on your 50" especially if it's High Def.
But your boys are only 6-8 years old. Kids usually enjoys Wii more. They'll enjoy games which allows them to imagine while playing. With Wii, they're the one in control. Their game play will depends on how they move.
I think they'll have fun with Wii. There are also lots of child-friendly games on Wii than the other two consoles. So maybe let them have Wii first.

When anyone asks me what I think, I say:
You should find out what your kids' friends have. Multiplayer games are where the action is and multiplayer games are waaaay more fun when you're playing with your friends.
That being said, XBox is where the games are.
I own a PS3 and love it dearly. I use it to watch movies on my tv, listen to music, podcasts, surf the net, view photos... heck I even play the odd game on it! But the power of the PS3 is as a new school home theater component that also allows you to play games.
The Xbox on the other hand... it's not as good at those media center type things as the PS3... but it is (arguably) much better at games.
But first, find out what your kids friends have. Then buy the console.
Oh... and don't buy a bunch of games... your kids can start Christmas day with some games from the Xbox Marketplace (they download them on the xbox)... after that, they'll likely want to pick out the coolest 2010 games themselves!
You're an awesome Dad getting your kids a cool gift!

he wii isn't going to give you the best graphics, but I think the game play and the motion control put this a cut above the other 2 consoles for children of this age.

This is a very common Christmas question! You're not alone! When anyone asks me what I think, I say:

I would have to recommend the wii. I have a 6 year old, and we have tons of fun playing it. Wii sports alone is great for a 6 year old, but there are a bunch of others he enjoys. The Lego (star wars, batman, indiana jones) are good, as is Mario Galaxy and Mario Cart Racing. All very fun. he wii isn't going to give you the best graphics, but I think the game play and the motion control put this a cut above the other 2 consoles for children of this age.

Definitely WII. Reason? They are 6 and 8. At that age...spending hours on a sofa, without moving...might be a problem.Kids have to move, and WII is the only console that can offer this. So, get a WII with a WII Fit and some accesories packs. Really cheap on ebay.
All your familly can use Wii Fit....even for morning exercises.
