I've had both, and where a front loader may be easier to extract the clothes from, I can't tell much of a difference in the way they cleaned my clothes or in my electric bill. I know top loaders are much cheaper and you can get a lot more options for less money.

Everyone else pretty much covered it. I can only see a few benefits top loaders may have over front loaders. The main benefit is price top loaders are significantly cheaper than front loaders to purchase. Although, who knows, maybe a front loader would recoup that in utilities savings. Also, with front loaders I know the door seals can pose a problem as they grow old and leak which is something top loaders don't have to deal with. With top loaders you can usually interrupt any cycle anytime, something I like.
