I wouldn't use a pet rat. I would and have however used pet cats to control mice populations in NYC for years. We never have mice for long.

But the idea of using animals to ward off animals is still a good one. I would just try to go for someone of the non-rodent variety.

Would you use pet rats to control a mouse infestation?
It seems more humane that poisons and traps. On the other hand, it could be extra trouble if you don't need the extra pets. Has anyone here tried it?

• Not a great answer, but at least you didn't make the mistake of thinking that rats and mice both being rodents had a negative bearing on using pet rats.

No I wouldn't, because both are rodents. If any of the mice are sick, I would imagine that they could pass the disease onto my rats. Then my rats would pass it on to uninfected mice. The last thing we'd need is an epidemic of sick mice AND sick work-rats. But the idea of using animals to ward off animals is still a good one. I would just try to go for someone of the non-rodent variety.

The idea is that mice are frightened of their larger cousins and stay away from the house because they can smell their presence. I don't think there is a disease risk involved.

If mice left any feces in the area and rats came into contact with them, they could pick up diseases just from that. Same goes if the rats got sick and left feces behind that mice came into contact with.
