Next Question
Here are some tips:
- Basil is a tender annual that is very susceptible to damage during an overnight frost . . . bring in overnight if frost is predicted and keep in a warm area of your house.
- Full sun is best
- Rich, loose, & well drained soil necessary . . . use a few rocked underneath soil to provide extra drainage around drainage hole in the bottom of the pot. Soil that is more on the limy side is good too.
- If you get flowers, pinch them off and keep just a few for the bees. This will allow more leaf production rather than the plants energy being sent to the flowers.
- Since this is an annual, you will need to sow it two or three times a year
- Lastly, Make sure to check the moistness of the soil every day and watering will most likely be needed most every day. This is especially important if you are using a clay pot. These will look good but do dry out quickly.
Hope this helps. I did get this information from a great book, The Garden Primer by Barbara Damrosch. I refer to it frequently when doing all types of gardening (indoors or outdoors, ground or pots).

1. You need a fair bit of sun to grow basil. It is not a shade plant.
2. However, it also wilts in hot sun, so watering must be attended to.
3. You might have mites or some other pest. Are the leaves mottled or crinkled? If so you may need to research ways of treating the infestation.
4. Make sure you do not make the soil too wet. Properly watered plants usually feel like a well wrung out sponge when you press your fingers to the soil.
5. Don't let plants get too tall. The overall shape should be stubby, so pinch the growing tip of the plant if it looks like it wants to be a pine tree. This keeps the plant from blooming. Blooming is undesirable because it a makes the leaves bitter and can ends the useful life of the plants.
