1. stop breathing. Mosquitoes follow carbon dioxide. That's why propane contraptions work.
2. don't eat bananas or other sweet fruit. Eat lots of garlic. The smells come out through your skin. Some biologists I met working on a fruit farm swore by garlic and B12 supplements.
3. Punk. Don't know if they sell it here on the mainland. I think they're called mosquito coils. Green. Light the end until it glows amber, then it smolders for hours. Don't sit too close...you'll smell like smoke, and they've got chemicals. Doesn't help when it's windy. Citronella candles are an OK substitute. Not as effective, but they look better and...hey it's a candle. More romantic than saying, "Hey honey, I lit some punks around the hot tub."
Just found that there's an Off brand: http://www.offprotects.com/mosquito-control/

4. Fan. It's hot anyway. Be selfish and sit in front of the fan. Mosquitoes can't fly when the wind is more than a few miles per hour.
5. Bats. Just a thought. Saw a half dozen of them dive-bombing a giant swarm of mosquitoes. Don't know how to train bats though.

Mosquito-proof your outdoor living space. Burn citronella candles on your deck or around your house when you plan to be outside after dark. You can also hang mosquito netting around your deck or porch for extra protection. Mosquito netting can be bought at most camping supply stores.

Keep your grass cut short.
Make sure there is no standing water in your yard. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in still water. If they have somewhere to breed in your yard, you'll be bothered by them.
Ultra sonic repellents seem to have limited effectiveness.
Don't wear black.
Eat garlic (or take garlic pills), and use fans to create wind, as mentioned in earlier answers both seemed to work for me.

Wearing bright clothes helps, but effect depends on the species.
You might get some ideas looking at this comparison of repellent solutions: http://www.cleverandeasy.com/Travel/mosquito-repellent-solutions-compared.html
I've also seen a repellent bracelet in a camping shop where 2 weeks effectiveness was claimed.

What are some of the best ways to keep mosquitoes away?
It is finally starting to warm up here in NY allowing us to spend some time out on the porch. Unfortunately the mosquitoes are back already and are a huge pain. What are some ways that work best for you? I don't want to buy one of those propane machines.

• Great list, I have shared this list with many people. We picked up a coil last night and it seemed to work quite well!

Try something like Off! Its products simply work, and its logo matches the color of your avatar. So, you'll probably like what it says on the website. The end, no propane machines necessary! Just get Off! http://www.offprotects.com

See if you can find Citronella Torches or Candles. Place a couple of these by your patio and the odor repels moquitos away. You can find these in hardware supply stores. Mosquito-proof your outdoor living space. Burn citronella candles on your deck or around your house when you plan to be outside after dark. You can also hang mosquito netting around your deck or porch for extra protection. Mosquito netting can be bought at most camping supply stores.

I got fed up with mosquitoes a few years ago and did some reading, and this is what helped me. Keep your grass cut short.

The best and HEALTHY way is to close your windows and get a Bed Mosquitoes Netting Cover, I live in Egypt and you can not imagine how bad is mosquitoes here specially if you have kids and you don't need to spray or get a smoke thing to keep mosquitoes a way as this will harm your kid's health.

If I knew a perfect solution, I'd be rich by now. Wearing bright clothes helps, but effect depends on the species.
