Water tends to attract mosquitoes. Maybe you should consider installing a bat house on your property. http://www.quazen.com/Recreation/Outdoors/Mosquito-Control-A-Bats-Natural-Instinct.724249 I have had much success with mine after reading about it 2 years ago. While it doesn't eliminate them completely, it greatly reduces the population. I think this is the safest and most economical way of getting rid of mosquitoes.

We have a mosquito problem. Just heard that hanging plastic bags of water will repel them. Has anyone tried this or will I just look hokey?

I've never heard that story and I'd doubt that it will work at all. Why would it? They love water. Maybe you can find some alternative idea's here: http://www.cleverandeasy.com/Travel/mosquito-repellent-solutions-compared.html
