Lettuce is a cool weather plant, best grown in the fall or very early spring. While there are a few varities that can tolerate warmer weather, warmer is the key word. Not hot.

For tomatoes, plant seedlings in a 70/30 blend of compost and vermiculite. Mix in 1 cup of bone meal and a few crushed egg shells, skipping this step will be detrimental to your plants. There's not enough calcium in any type of soil, and without, every single tomato has a good chance of developing blossom end rot. It takes a while for the calcium to start breaking down, so please don't add this stuff in after you've planted. Get them started right away! Full sunlight! Have fun!
