There are many different kinds of arborvitae (i.e., that is the correct Latin word which literally means "living tree"), so there is no simple answer. However, the web is rife with suggestions, including Mahalo, so check out the links, below, or enter "pruning arborvitae" into your favorite search engine, without the double quotes.

My arborvites are brown in the middel. How do I prune without exposing the brown inside?
The trees, ( ball shape) look dead after I prune the outside green. They really are not dead because eventually the green outside grows back and they are as big as ever. They have taken over the entire walkway in front of them. How can I get them down to size without blocking the walkway without exposing the brown and dead inner center?
