For me the savings are more than worth it. I have a costco card and find the savings in coffee alone. I can buy 2.5 lbs of whole bean Starbucks coffee for $20. At the regular grocery store, it's $10 for a 12 oz. bag of the same coffee. That's less than half price.
Granted you have to be able to manage the sheer volume of stuff you buy there. If you're a single person, you'd be hard pressed to find savings at costco- you'd probably waste more throwing stuff that's spoiled away.
Personally I find Costco better than Sams, specifically for Costco's meat and cheese section.

As for which is better, the Sam's where I live is much better than the CostCo. But where I used to live a few years ago, the Costco was way better than the Sam's. Ask local people where you live. Or ask for a tour or to just look around before deciding whether you want a membership - go when they're not super busy and they should be willing to do this.

With the membership fee of $50 per year, if you spent $500 a year there, the goods you purchased effectively cost 10% more than what it seems to be; if you spent $1000 a year, it would be 5%.
On the other side, Sam's Club is $40 per year. Go figure.

Is it worth it to get a Costco card and which is better Costco or Sam's.
I had a Costco card years ago and I am trying to decide if it is worth trying it again but I'm not sure if the savings are enough. What do you think?

Yes it's worth it if you cook for more than a couple of people. It also has good deals on stuff near the holidays. And it's good if you have guests over a lot, or even if you have a freezer. It also has fairly good prices on office supplies and other stuff. As for which is better, the Sam's where I live is much better than the CostCo. It depends on how much you are going to spend in Costco. With the membership fee of $50 per year, if you spent $500 a year there, the goods you purchased effectively cost 10% more than what it seems to be; if you spent $1000 a year, it would be 5%.
