Petunia's are hardy plants. They can survive a lot of black thumbs.
Are they in the little black pots? If so, dig the hole, or else put some potting soil in the bottom of the bigger pot. If they are going into a hole in the ground, fill the hole with water, wait until it drains and then put a little bit of potting soil on the bottom. Make it level. Now take the plant out of the little pot. Carefully pull the roots away from the sides and bottom so that they are dangling. Don't worry if you break a few. Use your fingers to try and work some of the old potting soil out of the clump. Not a lot. Some.
Now put the plant in the hole or bigger pot. Put some potting soil all around, and then press that soil down with your fingers, but don't pack it. Do this until the soil around the clump is level with the clump. If you have some small pebbles, put some of these around the plant. If you are using a pot, make sure that it has a saucer for the bottom.
Sometimes when I use a pot, I place some very old newspaper around the plant, make some cuts with a knife, cover the newspaper with potting soil and then put the pebbles on the soil. That seems to help keep the moisture in when you live in a dry climate.
Pour about a soda can's amount of water on the plant. Do this once a week. I have many of my plants in a reminder program on my computer.

The second green basket and the second pink basket have petunias.

Dig a row and plant an entire row instead of a hole for each plant.
