Since I was young, I am used to moving from one house to another house. It isn't really hard for dogs. Dogs here must be kept inside a cage or leashed so we don't have to worry if he would run away to try to go back to the old place though I always observed him looking at the surroundings. After a few days, he's back to normal... gobbling his food, barking when he see us and playing happily when we take him out for a walk.
I guess this is pretty much the same for animals like rabbits, birds, and those who don't really wander around that much. But it will be a lot different for cats. :(
Years back, when we moved in a new house, just few hours upon arriving, our cat left. :( I think she's looking for our old place or maybe she thinks that we're giving her away. :( She has grown up to our previous house that's why when we moved her in a new place, she acted differently and left. Kittens usually are okay when you're moving them in a new place, but to an adult cat, it isn't.
Some tips for cats if you'll move in a new house.
1. When you arrived in the new place, make sure to put the cat in a place where she couldn't escape. Make her get used to the new place before letting her walk around.
2. Feed her regularly with food most familiar to her. This will help her think that the new place is just okay and she doesn't have to go and try to go back to the old place.
3. Give her treats often.
4. Pet her. Just make sure not to pet her outside where she could run away. She's not familiar with the place yet so watch her carefully.
5. After about 2 days, let her walk around the house but make sure to check every possible way out. Watch her closely too to be sure.
After a few days, she'll be okay. This are the thing's I've done the next time we moved. It worked for us. ^^

I just recently went through the same thing. I was moving with 2 cats and a dog and I thought the move would be really difficult. However, I came upon several resources online that gave great tips. One of which was the Wheaton World Wide Moving site. You should definitely check out their moving with pets page. It gives some specific tips that will help you along the way to make this move a lot smoother.
