Home-garden.net recommends tea tree oil, or WD-40 (a spray lubricant - this stuff is, however, flammable - just so you know).
However, Purex.com has a great search feature that lets you select the type of stain, the material, et cetera, then gives you precise answers. I linked to the solution for removing tar from pure-cotton clothing - but just in case that doesn't work, you can just go to http://www.purex.com and click on the "Laundry Care" link, then go from there.

There are lots of ideas out there. WiseGeek has a few suggestions, including ice cubes and, of all things, lard, for example. Home-garden.net recommends tea tree oil, or WD-40 (a spray lubricant - this stuff is, however, flammable - just so you know).
