Pond algae is all about water quality. There are several possible reasons for the algae growth:
- Too much sunlight
- Nitrate and phosphate too high
- Insufficient filtration
- Too much organic matter (leaves and other debris)
- PH too high from use of concrete, marble or limestone
You can control many of the chemical issues by using water plants that will help equalize the nutrients and fend-off the algae growth.
The majority of the other issues can be resolved through more frequent and thorough maintenance. Chemicals are really not necessary, as proper care is sufficient.
Sunlight and PH issues from pond material can only be addressed through pond design. You may have to make a major change.
Although most all ponds look great after initial set-up, they do require some real work to keep them beautiful. You can do it! Good luck!

A simple way to control algae is to introduce fish that feed on algae to your pond. http://www.safegardening.co.uk/control-pond-algae.html
