These can grow very large if left alone. For larger shrubs and trees - you are best to hire a tree professional who can remove the entire plant(s). It is much safer this way - much quicker and it's worth it. It is unlikely you can save the shrubs for replanting, but you can ask them if you wish to do this. To remove the plants, the roots are extensive, so they will use proper equipment to shred up the base of the shrub and down into the main roots system area. This way you can either plant a more desirable tree or shrub in the same area or grow grass. We had a few Rhododendron removed last year along with some larger trees - the shrubs were done for free as a part of the job so I can't say what it might cost you but I'd suggest getting at least two quotes from certified and ensured service providers in your area.

Here in Florida, when we want a bothersome plant or tree dead, we cut it off at the base, drill a 1/4 inch hole about 3 to 6 inches deep in the stump, then pour or inject (turkey baster works dandy) herbicide in the hole immediately after. I've heard some people say "Roundup" works in the hole as well, but I haven't personally tried it. That even kills Brazilian Pepper Trees.

Can't you just take an axe and a shovel and just pull it right out of the ground?

If you are truly trying to destroy them, then try the following. Here in Florida, when we want a bothersome plant or tree dead, we cut it off at the base, drill a 1/4 inch hole about 3 to 6 inches deep in the stump, then pour or inject (turkey baster works dandy) herbicide in the hole immediately after.
